Gaganyaan is the programme that changes what ISRO is. Every prior mission could accept the loss of a vehicle as a bad day; this one cannot. Human rating the LVM3 means re-qualifying propulsion, structures, avionics and abort systems against a standard the organisation has never had to meet.
Qualification has advanced on several fronts at once. The Crew Escape System has been demonstrated in flight, the Service Module Propulsion System has completed hot tests, and the Integrated Main Parachute Airdrop Test series has proven the deceleration sequence that brings the crew module to a survivable splashdown.
The uncrewed G1 flight is the gate. Human-rated LVM3 assembly for it has begun at Sriharikota, with the robotic Vyommitra aboard in place of a crew.
